Aftermarket Wheel Compatibility

The only current reputable source (Discount Tire Direct) for the compatiblity of aftermarket wheels (specifically offset vs width) for the Clarity. TireRack must still be testing fitment as they don’t offer wheels for this car yet.

Anyways here’s a summary of the sizes based on the wheel models they confirm compatible:

18"
18x8 35-45 offset
18x8.5 35 offset
18x9 38-40 offset

19"
19x8 40 offset
19x8.5 30-45 offset
19x9.5 40 offset

20”
20x8.5 28-45 offset
20x9 36-38 offset
20x9.5 36-40 offset

Not that this is a cost effective solution, but Tesla Model 3 wheels and tires perfectly fit the Clarity.

The base Model 3 18" wheels are slightly wider than the Clarity 8" wide wheels

18x8.5 with +40 offset.
The tires are the exact right size 235/45R18
The 64.1mm center bore is identical to Honda so hubcentric spacer adapters are not required

The upgraded 19" wheels will also fit well.

19x8.5 with +40 offset.
The tires are the recommended size 235/40R19
The 64.1mm center bore is identical to Honda so hubcentric spacer adapters are not required

Just as a note, an owner that has had his Model 3 for a couple of weeks with the 19 inchers says he would not order that way if he had the chance to do it over. The "spokes" are proud of the tires and are the first thing to hit any curb. Plus they add about 10 lbs per corner of unsprung weight.

Having leased this car, the “rim bugs” never occurred to me yet,,,however with that said, I think the clarity would be in a different level with it dropped and rode on 20’s,,,

Interesting that most folks look at going to 19" or 20"'s while I am hoping that 17"'s will fit for mounting my X-Ice tires (Discount Tire does show this) I know the styling trend is for the biggest wheel possible. Problem is, for me, is the increased weight of the larger wheels and the harsher ride. C&D did a pretty good comparison going all the way from 15's to 19's on the same car

You would expect acceleration and economy to improve with the smaller wheels, the surprise was the handling was not improved going from 18's to 19's. In fact the 16's were just a bit less capably than the 18's on the skidpad. On my wife's Bolt going to 15's (not possible I know) would give the car about 25 miles more range(like adding 6 kWh to the battery)

I would love to hear if anyone does go with 20's on the Clarity and results on the ride, noise and range.

Formula 1 had an experiment a few years ago going from 13" to 18" wheels. They looked great but the lap times were massively slower and every driver hated the 'feel'.

Getting off my soapbox now, I have had many conversations around the office about the price of style over substance when it comes to car wheels.

Having checked tire pressures a few times now, I find my hands “bumping” into the plastic ornamentation on the wheels. I wonder how they affect aerodynamics.... I am not interested in upping or lowering the wheel diameter, but am always interested in switching to the lightest weight wheel I can find and afford for decreasing unsprung weight. On our ‘04 Sienna with 17” wheels switching from the original wheels to Enkei PF01s netted me 10 - 11 lbs per wheel. (I measured the original wheel and new one on a bathroom scale)! I could barely lift a wheel before, and the van drove like a truck.....

What’s interesting that they are specifying positive offsets between 40mm-55mm while Discount Tire Direct is specifying positive 30mm - 45mm

With over 53k mi I guestimate we'll reach the wear bars at around 60k mi. At that time, because of all the curb rash, I have started looking at wheels. With the rear wheel overhang I am scared to deviate much from stock specs. I was leaning towards Konig Maxxim Winner wheels 18x8 ET +45 but they seem possibly discontinued, plus even just 5 mm extra vs stock ET +50. I am now leaning towards Enkei Tuning TS-10 18x8 ET +50, which is stock specs exactly. Still eyeing Bridgestone Driveguards as replacement tires.

Just great. Just found out about tire noise reducing resonators from material I got from Honda Techinfo. I guess that is why the OEM wheels are so expensive. More info here:

I do not think one would be able to add this device to aftermarket wheels. I wonder about the optional wheel that was/is available direct from Honda. It's actually much cheaper.....
