EV Charge range

Sun Jul 21, 2019 7:28 pm

I'm the new owner of a 2018 Honda Clarity. Honda purports that the EV charge range is 47.5 miles, fully charged. We regularly fully charge to between 50 and 57 miles. Any idea on the discrepancy between advertised and estimated fully charged range?

The range reported by Honda is based on a specific set of tests (as dictated by the EPA) performed under laboratory conditions.

Different driving styles, speed, weather and other factors will all influence the range an EV can get.

Enjoy the "bonus" range while the weather is good. Not sure where yo live, but colder winter range will almost definitely put the range below the 47 miles listed.

If you want to see the application with the actual test results:

Note that the actual test results are de-rated by 30% to arrive at the EPA range numbers (to better reflect real world conditions).

I don't understand why they use laboratory conditions for measuring charge range. Don't they have all the info available via car computers nowadays? Just pull the real world data.

Well, most people drive under different conditions. If they don't "normalize" the conditions, then the range they provide is going to be pretty much meaningless. As extreme examples, one who drives "in town" may get a lot more range vs someone driving strictly 70 mph down the highway.

I just read somewhere that Toyota rates the Prius Prime range for the 70 mph straight highway use, so most people are pleasantly surprised with how much range they get. (I have not confirmed the validity of this statement though)...

I think Honda did an excellent job of arriving at the range estimate. I get 56-62 miles of range in the summer and 34-40 in the winter. That comes out to an average of 48 mile of range, pretty much exactly what they told me to expect. Yes, I know that climate makes a big difference, someone in Michigan would have a lower average. If your commuting is mainly at 70mph I could easily see the average range drop 5-10 miles. I think it would be interesting for the Mulroney sticker to include expected range at a set number of temperatures and two speeds.

In-Town
temp range
72 58
50 53
40 44
30 37

70mph
temp range
72 44
50 40
40 36
30 32
